Pulling Together Initiative - Project Suite
Program Description
The “Pulling Together Initiative” (PTI) was created to
support the development of local partnerships to help mitigate the
threat of invasive weeds. The program has been managed by the National
Fish and Wildlife Foundation and supported financially by multiple
federal funding partners. The evaluation used a combination of archival
research, a grantee survey, interviews with stakeholders and leading
experts, a technical literature review, and field visits to evaluate
outcomes in three core areas: ecological effectiveness, capacity
building, and education and outreach. The evaluation found that PTI
projects are largely successful in controlling some or all of their
baseline weed invasions, developing organizational and technical
capacity, and educating stakeholders and the public with regard to
invasive weed risks. PTI provides critical financial support for the
formation of local cooperative weed management associations, many of
which have sustained themselves after PTI funding ended. The evaluation
recommended that PTI focus on promoting best practices for grantees and
on taking advantage of grantee geographical clustering for peer-to-peer
networking and knowledge transfer. Because preventing or minimizing harm
from invasive plant species requires long-term, coordinated efforts at
the local level, actions taken to sustain these groups are important for
realizing long-term weed control objectives.
