The Puerto Rico Seagrass Fund was created to implement seagrass conservation projects in Puerto Rico.
In April 2014, NFWF and the Interagency Advisory Team (“IAT”) selected the University of Puerto Rico - Mayaguez to conduct an Initial Assessment identifying seagrass protection and restoration opportunities based on observed impacts to seagrass, and to recommend priority conservation locations and strategies. The Initial Assessment was completed in December 2014 and is available here.
NFWF is now conducting a second request for proposals through which the fund will competitively award grants for the most cost-effective seagrass conservation projects in the targeted geography which address the conservation and research priorities described in the Initial Assessment.
Management of the fund is conducted by NFWF in consultation/coordination with the IAT, which is comprised of the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, the National Marine Fisheries Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Caribbean Ecological Services Field Office, and the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources.
