WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 3, 2020) –The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) today announced the release of the 2020 Request for Proposals (RFP) for the Papahānaumokuākea Research and Conservation Fund.

This year, the program will award up to $1.1 million in grants to research and conservation projects that promote coordination and collaboration in support of effective management of the coral reef and atoll habitats of the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument located in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, and the over 7,000 species that call these habitats home.

Papahānaumokuākea Research and Conservation Fund grant pre-proposals are due March 3, 2020, and the full RFP can be found here. An applicant webinar will be held February 13, 2020, 9:00 a.m. Hawaii time.

Projects of interest will contribute to management actions to mitigate impacts from environmental stressors like sea-level rise, reduce human impacts like marine debris, characterize unexplored species and habitats and share the stories of the fish, wildlife and habitats of this remote monument with the public. Projects are encouraged to be innovative in studying and addressing these challenges within the context of a remote location.

Competitive grants are reviewed by a public-private committee of government and academic experts, and funding decisions are based on the ability of the applicant to implement strategies that achieve the program priorities and result in measurable conservation outcomes.

Funding for the Papahānaumokuākea Research and Conservation Fund 2020 RFP is provided by NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries. Additional information about the program can be found here.
