Creating kelp farms for wildlife, people and climate

You might not think much about kelp, but this mighty and versatile plant provides amazing benefits for our climate and our communities. A kelp forest not only sequesters carbon 5 to 20 times more than a living terrestrial forest, it also provides essential habitat for many species.

With support from the Bezos Earth Fund, in 2022 NFWF awarded a grant to the Native Conservancy to help develop 20 kelp farms along 6,400 miles of coastline, train a local workforce to steward the kelp beds, and provide internships for young Alaska Natives.
