Acres for America Expands New Mexico’s Largest Wildlife Area

In 2021, The Trust for Public Land protected more 54,000 acres of culturally and ecologically rich land on the slopes of Mount Taylor in New Mexico. This effort expands the Marquez State Wildlife Area, making it the largest in the state. The land, once privately owned and at risk of development, is home to elk, black bears, mountain lions, and vital habitats for seasonal wildlife migration. It also holds deep cultural significance for native New Mexicans.

Thanks to funding from Walmart’s Acres for America program, the property will soon be open to the public, offering new opportunities for camping, hiking, birding, and hunting near Albuquerque and Santa Fe. The protection of this land ensures long-term access for future generations and strengthens connections between critical wildlife corridors. This achievement highlights the power of public-private partnerships in preserving nature, culture and community.
