Walmart Foundation
Walmart Foundation supports conservation programs in the Great Plains that are beneficial for wildlife, ranchers and communities, such as the Great Plains Grassland Fund at NFWF and place-based initiatives that join the supply chain, local partners, ranchers, and others together to drive more regenerative grazing practices in key grassland regions.
In 2020, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation committed to help protect, restore, or more sustainability manage 50 million acres and one million square miles of ocean by 2030. Since then, Walmart Foundation has supported place-based initiatives across the Great Plains that help join the supply chain, local partners, ranchers, and others together to drive more regenerative grazing practices in key grassland regions. Walmart Foundation and NFWF began working together to advance conservation on grasslands in 2023, starting with funding for projects that support ranchers in the Southern Great Plains. The partnership has evolved to support conservation work across the Great Plains with the launch of the Great Plains Grassland Fund (GPGF) in 2026. The GPGF supports the implementation of conservation projects and allows other partners to contribute to this work. The main objective of the GPGF is to support communities to implement conservation work and reduce grassland conversion.
Great Plains Grassland Fund
The Great Plains Grassland Fund is a public-private grant fund that helps protect and sustainably manage the native grasslands of the Great Plains by pairing land protection strategies with technical and financial assistance for ranchers. The program aims to permanently conserve high-value grasslands at risk of conversion through easements and other durable land protection tools; support ranchers and communities with resources to improve grazing management, maintain working lands, and keep grasslands intact; and build a durable funding mechanism that leverages public and private capital, supports qualified implementation partners, and advances community-led conservation projects across the region.
