The Five Star Program seeks to develop nationwide community stewardship of local natural resources, preserving these resources for future generations and enhancing habitat for local wildlife. Grants seek to address water quality issues in priority watersheds, such as erosion due to unstable streambanks, pollution from stormwater runoff, and degraded shorelines caused by development.Image

Walker Basin Restoration Program
The Walker Basin Restoration Program was established by Congress in October 2009. The Program’s primary purpose is to restore and maintain Walker Lake, and to protect agricultural, environmental and habitat interests in the Walker River Basin. Walker Lake is a natural desert lake in Nevada at the terminus of the Walker River Basin which includes lands in Nevada and California.Image

Southern Plains Grassland Program
The Southern Great Plains host a unique set of wildlife species that are specifically adapted to this grassland ecosystem. Many of these species, such as the monarch butterfly and songbirds, migrate to and from the region in order to complete their life cycle. Others, including the pronghorn, swift fox, prairie chicken and bobwhite quail are year-round residents that live alongside human residents who are engaged in the ranching of livestock, primarily beef cattle.Image
