Atlantic Flyway Shorebird Initiative

The Atlantic Flyway Shorebird Initiative aims to increase populations for three focal shorebird species within the flyway by 15 to 20 percent over a 10-year period. The three focal species – American oystercatcher, red knot and whimbrel – represent different migratory strategies and require specific approaches to address habitat loss, predation and human disturbance. To achieve this goal, the grant program supports five strategies outlined in NFWF’s Atlantic Flyway Shorebird Business Plan: (1) conserve critical habitat, (2) restore habitat, (3) reduce human disturbance, (4) improve harvest management, and (5) monitor and assess progress.

Klamath Basin Restoration Program

NFWF has been active in conservation activities throughout the Klamath Basin for 30 years, awarding funds to help stabilize and increase populations of native and anadromous fish. These projects have been carried out by diverse organizations and entities including local, state, federal, and tribal governments and agencies, non-profit organizations, irrigation districts, watershed councils, and academic institutions.

Vessel Strike Avoidance Fund

The Vessel Strike Avoidance Fund seeks to support the development and adoption of innovative technology solutions to provide mariners with tools to more effectively avoid collisions (vessel strikes) with large whales and benefit conservation of critically endangered North Atlantic right whales and other cetacean species. The program is a partnership between NFWF and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and focuses primarily on the Atlantic Coast, the range of the right whale.

Southern Company Power of Flight Program

NFWF's Southern Company Power of Flight Program restores and revives the populations and habitats of birds in the southern U.S. through restoration and environmental education.

Fisheries Innovation Fund

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s Fisheries Innovation Fund supports effective participation of fishermen and fishing communities in the implementation of sustainable fisheries in the United States. The Fisheries Innovation Fund houses multiple programs with distinct requests for proposals (RFP) to work towards sustainable fisheries in the United States: an Electronic Monitoring and Reporting Grant Program RFP released annually, and a New England Gear Innovation Fund RFP. There is also a Fisheries Innovation Fund RFP that was released annually from 2010 through 2019, and NFWF is exploring opportunities for future years of this RFP.

Chesapeake Bay Stewardship Fund

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation's Chesapeake Bay Stewardship Fund is dedicated to protecting the bay by working to advance local on-the-ground watershed restoration, helping local communities clean up and restore their polluted rivers and streams, and restoring and protecting key Chesapeake Bay species.

Long Island Sound Futures Fund

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s Long Island Sound Futures Fund supports projects to fully restore the health and living resources of Long Island Sound. It operates within a partnership of federal and state agencies, foundations, non-governmental organizations, educational institutions, user groups, and individuals dedicated to restoring and protecting the Sound.
